Katie Megginson is a
principal product designer
in Los Angeles, Calif.
Oh hey there! More about me?
I’m currently at Big Cartel helping indie artists and makers sell online.
If you’ve been designing long enough, Big Cartel might’ve been where your first portfolio lived (sorry if I just dated you 🥀🫂).
I also do independent design work for select clients, currently Monologue.
What am I doing at Big Cartel?
TL;DR: I lead design on a lot of big efforts. A few worth noting:
our complete redesign of the seller experience,
making a free trial our primary acquisition motion,
and generally using judgment and influence to help steer on what we should or shouldn’t build.
Why do I design?
Building something people willingly pay for is rewarding. Building something people actually enjoy is addictive.
Kyle Zantos treats building software as a gift and I hella subscribe to this philosophy.
How do I bring *~`ai into my workflow`~*?
Speaking of addictive, I am quite AI-pilled. Read this case study of how I actually apply it at work though.
How do I define craft? Especially when execution is cheap?
AI or not, craft has been and is about the decisions. It’s more often about what you’re saying no to than what you’re saying yes to. That applies to visual design, systems thinking, design methods of choice, product decisions—all parts of the job.
Who am I away from my computer?
I lurve playing Euro-style board games (faves right now are Earth and Dune Imperium) and caring for (stressing over) my lawn.
I’m on a quest to find the perfect lamp at a reasonable price. I’m on another quest to bake the perfect blueberry muffin.
My husband and I are passionate about foster care and are licensed foster parents.
And, I’m a mom with 3 boys under 6! Want to know what that’s like? 🌝
Otherwise, I’d love to hear from you if I sound like an interesting person after all this writin’.
